The Hobarris Loop Walk
The Hobarris Loop is one of four short walks on our Walks From The Door leaflet which can be found in The School House map room.
This is a walk along quiet country lanes which is easy to navigate and easy underfoot.
The walk starts off by turning right out of The School House and follows the road along the valley floor until the first right turn which is signposted to Clun. This is a section that Molly gets taken on regularly on her morning walks. There is one point where she goes under the fence and into the river for a quick paddle.
At the road junction a small tributary joins the River Redlake and it flows under a bridge as it continues towards Chapel Lawn.
After passing through the few houses in Pentre, the walk continues along the lane to the old quarry and Quarry Farm. Deer can sometimes be seen in the woodlands next to the old quarry. After going over Wheelbarrow Bridge the route turns left where it is signposted to Menutton at the road junction. Our route climbs uphill as it goes the short distance to Menutton. On the right side can be seen the evidence of harvesting of woodland in 2022. At the top of the hill we continue along the lane as it goes between the buildings of Menutton Farm.
Once the farm is behind you the views of the Shropshire countryside open up. We leave the road where it turns to the left and we turn right through a metal gate and onto an old by-way with more far reaching views. Still shown as a road on the OS map, although it has a tarmac surface it puts context to the phrase “grass doesn’t grow on a busy road”. This is not a busy road.
After going through a third gate, we leave this road at its end and turn right. We start to descend slowly as we head towards tranquil hamlet of Hobarris. Hobarris is a collection of a few farms and other buildings.
As the lane continues down with Hobarris Wood on one side, on the other is the open hillside of Hodre Hill. Our loop is completed when this quiet road comes back to the point where we turned off and headed up to Menutton.
We retrace our steps back through Pentre and return to Chapel Lawn having had a good stretch of the legs with some splendid views of South Shropshire and beyond.
