A Day at Ludlow Races in Shropshire
We’re not big racegoers, but before we moved to Shropshire, we used to enjoy a day out at Epsom Races on Derby Day. Of course being in early June it would always be a warm sunny day, so when we decided to head off to Ludlow Races in late November, we knew it would be a very different experience.
The jump racing season at Ludlow racecourse runs from early October to May, so it’s a great opportunity to get out and enjoy a quintessentially British day out. Race meetings can bring in a mixed crowd – seasoned punters, locals enjoying a day out, and those just looking for a bit of country life.
Soak up the Atmosphere
Whatever the weather, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to soak up the atmosphere. We had sunshine and showers in mid-November, but it can sometimes be quite chilly so you’ll need to come prepared - layered up with sturdy footwear and thick socks, ready for whatever the forecast may bring. Our top tip would be to keep moving between the parade ring and the stands. If you’re heading out for one of the winter meetings then you can always wrap your hands around a cup of mulled wine or a mug of tea to keep warm.
The parade ring is a great place to soak in the sights and sounds of the horses preparing to race as you decide how to place your bet – it all adds to the adrenaline rush. With Ludlow being a smaller course, it’s easy to get close to the action, and if you’re lucky, you might find yourself chatting with a jockey or owner – especially if you bring your racing enthusiast friends with you!
Golden Rules for a Great Day at the Races
Any day out at the races needs a few golden rules. Firstly, set a budget and stick to it! We decided on £35 over 7 races, so enough for the minimum bet of £5 on all seven races. Then you can always reinvest any winnings of course.
Secondly, pick a strategy. Do you study the form in the programme, or pick a horse based on its name, or just go for the jockey with the most colourful outfit? Whatever you decide, choose a strategy that suits you. If you’re one of the aforementioned ‘seasoned punters’ then it probably won’t take too much effort to study the form and choose accordingly. But if you’re more of a novice then you could spend the whole day immersed in the form guide and still get nowhere, so maybe horse’s names or jockey colours might be more fun.
The Thrill of the Race
The jump meetings at Ludlow are full of excitement, as horses and jockeys tackle the hurdles and fences of this challenging course. The course is known for its sharp bends and tight spots, so every race is unpredictable. Whether you’ve placed a bet or not, the thrill of watching the horses thundering past with steaming breath is something you won’t forget.
Why Ludlow Races?
A day at Ludlow Races isn’t just about the horses – it’s a mix of sport, nature, and local culture all rolled into one. Whether you’re really into racing or just after a fun day with a great atmosphere, Ludlow Races have something for everyone. The jump races are full of excitement, and the backdrop of the Clee Hills is simply stunning. It’s the perfect chance to enjoy the fresh air, watch the races, and take in the laid-back charm of the Shropshire countryside.
