The School House B&B's Top 5 Ways to Explore Ludlow
Imagine you’ve just arrived in what John Betjeman described as “probably the loveliest town in England”. You want to see the town’s best features and attractions, but you don’t know where to start. Well, look no further than The School House B&B’s 'Top 5 Ways to Explore Ludlow'.
1. Visit Ludlow Farmshop
Begin by heading to the Ludlow Farmshop at Bromfield (SY8 2JR) – ‘deli heaven on an epic scale’ was how we described this foodie destination when we first arrived in Shropshire. If you love local cheeses, cold meats and unusual preserves then this is the place for you. Stock up on deli goodies that you can store in your mini-fridge until you go home... if they last that long!
2. A Walk and Coffee by the River
A walk along the River Teme is a great way to appreciate Ludlow. The Breadwalk follows the river between Dinham and Ludford Bridges. If you stand on Dinham Bridge looking back towards the town you’ll get the picture-postcard view of the castle and the river. Who knows, you might even spot salmon or a kingfisher. If you’d rather sit and relax, grab a coffee and (if you’re early enough) a cinnamon roll at CSONS at the Green Cafe on Millennium Green (parking at SY8 1EE).
3. Browse the Market & Independent Shops
No visit to Ludlow would be complete without a walk through Castle Square (car park at SY8 1AT). Browse the market stalls or just stand back and admire some of Ludlow’s 500 listed buildings. This is the beating heart of Ludlow. Quirky shops, delis and some great pubs and restaurants nestle amongst the surrounding streets. Ludlow is renowned for its array of independent shops. Check out the Mouse Trap cheese shop and Harp Lane Deli just off Castle Square, and The Silver Pear on Broad Street. The Ludlow Brewery is also worth a visit.
4. Discover St. Laurence’s Church
St. Laurence’s is no ordinary church, it’s like a cathedral dominating the skyline from almost anywhere in the town. And that can only mean one thing – the views from the top are the best and most far-reaching views of anywhere in Ludlow. There are 201 steps on the spiral staircase, but you will be rewarded for the climb. [Check before you go though - 01584 872073]. Head to the Chancel where there is an amazing collection of misericords (wooden carvings) dating back to 1425. Each carving tells a story, so it’s worth picking up a guide on your way in to fully appreciate them. After a browse round the church, we recommend taking a break at Icon Coffee. Be sure to check out the gift shop too, where you can pick up lots of lovely Ludlow memorabilia.
5. Enjoy the Views from Whitcliffe Common & Mortimer Forest
After a great day out in Ludlow, return to Chapel Lawn via Whitcliffe Common (SY8 2HB) and Wigmore, stopping at the roadside parking area on Whitcliffe Common for a view across the town. If you're here with your four-legged friend there are lots of walks in Mortimer Forest near this spot, or further along starting from one of the Forestry Commission car parks – High Vinnalls is one of our favourites and great for off-lead dog walks.
