Seven Scenic Walks in The Shropshire Hills
From rolling hills to ancient woodlands to picturesque valleys, the Shropshire Hills are best explored on foot. If you're seeking adventure and tranquility, here are seven scenic walks in and around the Shropshire Hills, close to The School House B&B, that promise a visual delight:
1 Caer Caradoc, Chapel Lawn: A scenic, but strenuous ascent up the hill in front of The School House B&B. The top of the hill is open access land and contains the remnants of an Iron Age hillfort. Once at the summit you can marvel at the views of the hills in mid-Wales as well as the Shropshire hills.
2 Brineddin Wood, Chapel Lawn: Discover Brineddin Wood as you meander along shaded pathways surrounded by towering oak trees. Enjoy the bluebells and fern-covered glades in this woodland sanctuary which opens onto fields at the eastern end, before descending along the quiet country lane back to Chapel Lawn.
3 Clun Castle and River Walk: A pleasant and easy walk. Wander through the picturesque village of Clun as you discover the ancient ruins of Clun Castle which are maintained by English Heritage. Walk along the River Clun as it passes through the meadows. Don't miss the packhorse bridge which is believed to date from about 1450.
4 Carding Mill Valley and The Long Mynd, Church Stretton: Explore the rugged beaty of Carding Mill Valley with it’s babbling brook and the upland of the Long Mynd covered in heather. Wild ponies can be found wandering freely on the top. Our map room has a variety of walks from a gentle stroll to a strenuous day hike.
5 Stiperstones Ridge Walk: Discover the landscape of the Stiperstones, an ancient quartzite ridge steeped in folklore and legend. Follow the ridge path to the Devil's Chair, a rocky outcrop with panoramic views stretching as far as the eye can see. A good pair of shoes are recommended for walks on the main ridge.
6 The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre Trail, Craven Arms: A gentle walk that winds its way through wildflower meadows, ancient woodlands, and riverside paths. Discover the nearby Stokesay Castle while you are in the area.
7 Offa’s Dyke, Knighton: This ancient route traces the borderlands between England and Wales. Some say the sections around Knighton are the most spectacular. The Knucklas viaduct, with thirteen arches, is certainly a sight to be seen.
