A Feast of Walking Festivals
We’re spoilt for choice as far as walking festivals go in Shropshire and the bordering counties. We have three excellent festivals within 30 minutes’ drive of The School House B&B - Bishop's Castle in May, Church Stretton in June and Kington in September. There are a couple more within an hour or so. The festivals offer walks for all ages and abilities. Some walks are themed (stargazing, geology and photography being a few examples). If you’re walking in the Shropshire Hills or surrounding areas they're bound to be enjoyable with stunning scenery to keep you going from start to finish.
It’s a great feeling getting up day after day knowing that you’re going for a walk. At the end of the day though, you don’t always want to do very much except have a good bath or shower and relax. All our rooms here at The School House B&B are spacious, with comfortable sofas to stretch out on. Our en-suite bathrooms have powerful showers and there’s a fabulous double-ended bath in our Caradoc room.
If you don’t feel like going out for a meal after an invigorating day’s walk we can provide a ‘bedroom picnic’. If you’d prefer to bring your own goodies you can store them in the silent mini-fridge in your room. Our packed lunches are based on years of walking experience. What we provide will keep you well fed without laying heavy on the stomach. We may be able to arrange transport to and from walks – please give us a call to discuss your requirements.

Ironbridge Gorge - held annually on the first Saturday of the May Day Bank Holiday for 9 days.
57 walks over 9 days around Ironbridge Gorge. Discover the remarkable history of this unique part of the world, where the Industrial Revolution started over 250 years ago.
Whitchurch - takes place every year over a weekend in early May.
On the Welsh border, this Roman-age town hosts a weekend festival that includes walks that explore the history of the area.
Bishop's Castle - walks in the local Shropshire Hills in May annually.
A selection of led walks around Bishop’s Castle, a small market town surrounded by the wonderful Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Local footpaths take walkers over open hilltops with impressive views, through valleys, hamlets, country lanes and the remains of ancient hill forts.
Church Stretton - guided walks in the heart of the Shropshire Hills during late June.
Walks and outdoor activities for all the family, including dogs, and for all ages and levels of fitness, including walks covering local history, geology and wildlife. There is an excellent shuttle bus service that operates at weekends between Easter and the end of September within the Shropshire Hills National Landscape.
Kington - a taste of the superb walking country that surrounds Kington, takes place in late April.
Kington is a picturesque walking hub on trails including Offa’s Dyke and the Mortimer Trail and criss-crossed by ancient drovers’ routes. The festival features over 30 walks varying in length from 1 to 14+ miles, led by experienced guides who will share their knowledge of the landscape, history, flora or fauna of this part of the Welsh Marches; there are also some self-led walks including a challenge for the more competitive walker!
